How to Keep Hydrated in Winter

Windy days, chilly nights. Thick sweaters and ski weekends. Snuggling up in a warm blanket with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. There’s so much to love about wintertime, but there’s something else that comes with the cold season – dry, chapped skin. And it’s all because of the cold dry air that draws out the natural moisture from your skin. The good news is, there’s lots you can do to keep you – and your skin – hydrated in the winter. Here’s some easy ideas:

Put the kettle on

Everyone knows that in the summer, you should drink loads of water to prevent dehydration. But it’s also important in the winter. Spending time indoors with the heat on is more drying than you think. Make sure you are hydrated from the inside by drinking enough fluids throughout the day. Brew your favorite tea and keep a warm pot on your desk at work. You’ll not just keep hydrated – you’ll also warm yourself up!

Steam it up

Cold air has a low humidity level, which is extremely drying. So, a great way to minimize the impact on your skin is by increasing humidity in the air at home. You can do this the old-fashioned way, by boiling a pot of water on the stove and letting the steam dissipate. Want to make it even better? Add your favorite herb to the water and enjoy the steamy aroma. (If you prefer a more modern approach, you can invest in an electric humidifier – this will also do the trick.)

Smooth it on

During the winter, your skin needs extra help from the outside to retain moisture and replace lost hydration. Use a high-quality moisturizer every morning and evening to prevent dryness and irritation. It’s so important to choose a moisturizer for your skin type. Do you have dry skin? An oil-rich moisturizer is best. Or perhaps your skin is oily or acne prone? Then use a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog the pores. One last tip: skin that is constantly exposed to the air needs a heavy-duty moisture boost, so pay extra attention to the face, lips and hands.
